Choosing the perfect watermelon is easy! Our produce team has some pointers:

  1. Look for a melon free of cuts and bruises. Minor scratches are OK.

  2. Watermelons should feel heavy for their size due to a high water content.

  3. The stem end should have a little give when slightly pressed.

  4. Tap the melon. Listen for a "drumming" vibrating sound. Do not choose a melon that has a dull "thud" when tapped

Did you know?

Once they're picked from the field, watermelons do not continue to ripen. A just-picked watermelon is as ripe as it's ever going to be.

That yellow spot you see on the underside of a watermelon is called a field spot. This is the side of the watermelon was touching the ground as it was growing. This is an indicator that the watermelon ripened on the ground.

Be sure to wash your watermelon before cutting it open! Cut watermelon should be stored in the refrigerator.
